EventVue and Pathable: Social networking returns to its roots

by Jason Preston on July 3, 2008

I remember back when Facebook first started spreading through college networks, the number one use was showing your friends who you made out with at the party last night. Even the name, Facebook, is all about putting names to faces.

It wasn’t until much later that it all developed into the larger phenomenon of shifting social activities from the real world to an online space. And to fair, that shift has opened up a world of possibilities.

But it’s also left a strange sort of gap in the “putting faces to names” space. Facebook’s event system isn’t particularly robust, and a couple of networks like Pathable and EventVue have popped up to help conference organizers map out their attendees and manage introductions before the actual event.

It’s interesting to see social networking services come full circle and refocus on augmenting real world social activities instead of trying to create online analogues. I think that’s a distinction that many people fail to make when looking at social tools.

Rob from EventVue here. Thanks for recognizing our efforts. We’d love to get you at one of our conferences so you can see it an action and give us some tips on how we could be better.

Hi, thanks for this post.

We’re trying very hard to fill this gap. We think there is a lot of opportunity to improve the way conferences have been run for years, especially to the extent that we can improve face to face networking by bringing social technology into the conference. To this end we’re working hard on improving something as simple as the conference badge and as full-featured as iphone and blackberry interfaces to the conference networking tools.

Hi Jason, you’re right that there’s a new batch of social networking tools for conferences. There was actually an old batch, but most people missed them because they didn’t work. I do think, though, that you need to include CrowdVine in this group.

We’re the original and the biggest out of the three. Although we do offer professional services, we also have self-service options. In other words, we’re the only one out of the three that you could use without talking to a salesperson.

I haven’t seen a live EventVue yet, but based on what they tell me we offer a similar experience with our main difference being that we also offer a social calendaring/agenda-builder for conferences.

If you or any of your readers are planning conferences, I’d love to talk about ways that CrowdVine could help. I’m the founder/CEO, tony@crowdvine.com, 707.953.3868.
