As I was preparing for the Webinar I gave last week, I began thinking about how overwhelming monitoring the online conversation can be. After all, what you really have are chunks of content flying around the Web, taking any number of increasingly convoluted paths. For example, a blog post can ...

[ Update: They've already got a widget, I just couldn't find it. The format appears to be:
http://friendfeed.com/embed?user=[username]
Thanks Bret!

The more I think about FriendFeed, the more I like it. I'm only subscribed to 10 people, and only 10 people have subscribed to my FriendFeed so far, but I like that unlike ...

My boss likes to point out, whenever he looks at twitter, that it is filled with the most inane and pointless updates.
I don't necessarily agree with him, but he does have a point.
John Gruber pointed on Daring Fireball today to this post by Russell Beattie:
Think about any ...

I'm certainly guilty of clutter. There are plenty of apps that I've added to my profile and subsequently ignored. It's not really worth the effort for me to uninstall them, so I just don't use them.

If you check out the official Facebook blog post today, you'll find a link to a Facebook page that offers screenshots and previews of a possible new layout for profiles.
They're looking for feedback from users on how it looks, so jump in and give your two cents (which means ...

A while ago I wrote about Google's relatively new Social Graph API.
Today I keep running into FriendFeed, which is an open-to-the-web approximation of Facebook's newsfeed, complete with a bookmarklet to add "posted items."
[ As a side-note of complete confusion, I have not to my knowledge signed up for a ...

Brad Greenspan, one of the minds behind MySpace, has just thrown his hat into a new arena with a site called LiveVideo.com.
What's the big idea?
From poking around the vnunet post about the launch as well as the actual site itself, it looks like the aim is to bring a ...

It feels like it's hard to look around the blogosphere now without seeing the tech elite decrying Facebook for their privacy issues, lack of new, useful features, and inability to control applications (although I think they're doing a good job).
The problem is that, like the tech elite with the ...

A little while ago Facebook launched a Spanish edition of the social network, and since then I've heard pretty much nothing about it. So how is it doing?
A quick Google search yields this piece on the American Observer, which has a collection of Spanish user reactions:
Carlos Sanchez, who accesses ...

Paul Jeffries, who leads the Platform Developer Operations & Support team at Facebook, posted this morning on the Official Facebook Blog with a rundown on the new features they've put together to deal with the "application spam" problem.
The lesson for app developers: don't be spammy, you will get smacked. ...

Connie Bensen has an excellent post up today about cultivating an active community.
I might underline that in the end you can only encourage users to participate, you can't strong-arm them into it. As a general rule of thumb, people throw their hat into the ring when they are

The New York Times wrote yesterday about Facebook's now-working delete your account option.
I can see the inside of the Facebook offices now:
"This is good news for Luddites."
"When you participate in an online forum, do you go back to it later and remove all of your posts?"
"When you put pictures ...

We are so in the right business according to the Wall Street Journal. Lee Gomes interviews chief executive of Sparta Social Networks, who apparently is making big, big money from supplying dedicated social networks to companies. Don't have plans to build your own? Better get on it:
"...social networks have become ...

Tim Davies has a good breakdown of the pros and cons of using either Facebook Pages or Facebook Groups to engage with your audience on Facebook.
I wrote about this split a while ago when Pages first showed up on Facebook, and most of what I said then still stands.
Pages ...
