Facebook Account Disabled, Banned, then Re-enabled

by Jason Preston on November 2, 2007

You might have spotted this story over the past day if you’ve been reading Scoble, Howlett, or Rubel’s Twitters:

Earlier this week I logged into Facebook and discovered that without warning my account had been deleted. According to Facebook, I am a fake, a charlatan, a nonperson and all of my more than 200 Facebook friends are the victims of a cruel hoax. My crime? Violating Facebook’s Terms of Service by not using my “real name.”

While in this case, Jon Swift is right to complain that Facebook didn’t check up on his identity first and didn’t treat his follow-up with much kindness, I think I’d point out that requiring correct names and birth dates is important for, say, tracking sexual predators. It’s not pointless, is my point.

That said, there’s quite a story here - his account was disabled, he was told: “we will not be able to reactivate this account for any reason. This decision is final.” After soaring up Techmeme and getting his own Facebook group, his account was in fact re-enabled. Whatdy’a know.

Read the full account on his blog.

Hey my name is Svetlin Radoslavof. My account was dissabled due to adding friends. I had no idea that this could happen. If I would have known I would not have not done that. Please reactivate my account, Im a student at the University of Rochester and I have many contacts on which I have made through face book. Many people are counting on me. Please I would not abuse this feature ever again.
