Upcoming Facebook Features: Foreign Languages! Bigger Group Messaging! Former Name Search! News Feed Stories About Group Activity!

This just went up on Facebook’s In the Works page. I think the coolest feature from a community building standpoint is by far the last one. Being able to see what’s going in my groups in my news feed will make me a better group participant and a better community manager.

Update: The foreign language thing is also really huge. Back in September, I wrote about how language barriers were creating major international growth issues for Facebook, even though their most populous network is now London.

One final thought. The group features could be interesting, but if it’s implemented anything like Xing, it quickly means overflowing inbox (or feed) and you gloss over the messages as non interesting.

@Scott that’s the beauty of the News Feed though. There is a lot of uninteresting stuff in there, but your eye does get drawn to the things you really care about. And the beauty part is that you don’t have to DO anything with the feed items that don’t interest you. They just keep swimming by on the river of news.

Teresa,

I completely agree with you that the last one is by far the most important. Almost every week, I’ve searched through the Applications list and Googled for methods of keeping better track of the Groups I’ve signed up for, but with no success. What I’ve wanted has been a RSS-type ticker of updates on my Groups, but none has existed so far. It’s HIGHLY encouraging to me to see Facebook realizing the same thing and adding it to News Feeds.

Of course, the danger is that News Feeds will become even more cluttered. But this is definitely a good next step.

Cheers,
Michael
