More info on Facebook disabled accounts

by Jason Preston on October 16, 2007

I’m stealing a really useful link from Scoble this morning, I’d like to point everyone to this list of 13 ways you can get your Facebook account disabled:

1. You didn’t use your real name
Don’t try to use a nickname (or initials)in lieu of the name on your birth certificate, because Facebook will find you and spit you out.

2. You joined too many groups
Remember that the maximum limit is 200 groups per user. More than that just looks desperate, don’t you think?

People are understandably worried about disabled accounts, although as I’ve heard most disabled accounts end up being recovered. Still - it’s like filing your taxes: try not to raise too many red flags.

FB is shit 12.03.07 at 12:50 am

my account was disabled, and all i did was take part in one of their applications. which is ironic as they provide the application which requires us to add many friends, which i did (i added 20 friends in 1 hour) and they disabled me thinking i was a spammer.
this i blame fully on facebook. why allow an application to be installed by your users only to disable ppl for using it?
weird!
i am frustrated and i dont think its fair as i was using a FB application . If tht application was going to create problems, then dont let us download it!
ridiculous

My account was disabled with no reason and notice.
They can’t tell from spammer to private user..
I was searching my friends and they said I was working too fast?!
That’s really not making sense as the whole point is finding your friends..

My Facebook account was apparently disabled because I was sending harassing messages or spam.

Well, Pete: I DIDN’T HARRASS OR SPAM ANYONE

AND NO I DON’T UNDERSTAND…WHY THE F**K DO YOU WRITE “THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING”? WHEN I DON’T F**KIN’ UNDERSTAND WHAT THE F**K I DID TO GET DISABLED.

I have had my account disabled by facebook and i cant get a reason why ? The only reason i can think of is when i use my mobile phone on facebook and write on peoples walls or message with them my message goes in a few times even though i only put it in once this is not my fault surely they can see this. Can anyone give me any advice about how to get my account open again please

5

Jason Preston 02.18.08 at 2:39 pm

@Natalie - as I understand it your best bet is to just send Facebook support an e-mail, wait for their response, be really nice, and try to prove that you’re a real human.

I got disabled for misuse as they call it. If you use FB from your blackberry or iphone u can do many things (pokes, friends, messages) faster.

Do they know that? I told them. Did they understand? Nop. They blocked me 3 more times then they disabled my profile.

Guys lets move to another site. we have the power. not FB.

malak 03.10.08 at 8:00 am

well i have another user in facebook which is me but they blocked my alter ego which is sexually into bear men!
i joined groups, yes.i post messages on groups wall every week to find a intimate friend! (i can think this is the reason why they disabled me,thinking im a spammer)

but i mean, they should have send a notice,a warning,no they shut it down just like that!!
i had important contacts and groups i need to get a hold of!
this is so sick!

Well i heard Facebook was suspending accounts etc for all sorts of reasons….mostly as in my case with no warning…. security given as a reason for not telling me why? Then after i sent an email to support to ask why and wot suspension actually means i was disabled? So far after 5-6hrs still no reply…. to questions asked in a clear polite manner and wot i can do 2 rectify any issues? U would think with a huge investment 2 look after they could just simply reply to customer client Questions in a polite and prompt manner?

Hopefully my story will help others avoid a bad experience. My account was “disabled” when I was simply searching for the phrase “mountain biking” within my network. There was a brief message just before it logged me off. It said something about “running into a block” and to slow down. Not speaking the secret Facebook lingo, I didn’t know what they were trying to say (what’s a block?). If it was important, why didn’t they just use normal English to explain the situation? Duh!

Well, I indeed slowed down my searches for the next minute or two. But then it quickly logged me off anyway and disabled my account. I scrutinized the terms of the User Agreement and found absolutely no mention of restrictions on the Search feature. They claim that by simply running a search I was guilty of abusing or harassing other Facebook users. This is a false claim, of course.

So far they have ignored my requests to “undisable” it. This is unfortunate since I had several outstanding friend requests to very important people in my life. Now they’ve probably gotten confused and thought I’m a flake.

I think what happened to me (and others) results from the fact that Facebook’s search never worked properly anyway (unlike all other sites). This is because it inserts an increasingly high percentage of redundant results (ie, profiles keep showing up again and again in the search results). After a few screens you reach a point of diminishing returns where perhaps one of ten results per page are “new” - the rest were displayed already on previous screens. This causes a user to hit the next button even faster hoping to see new results. After a few minutes an administrator detects this activity and destroys their account.

I’ve never heard of this happening on another site. This behavior on the part of the Facebook Team seems quite unprofessional (even anti-social), like so many other aspects of their site. Hopefully over time the Facebook Team will outgrow their naivete and get their act together. Unfortunately for them this may require a lot of bad press and a class action suit or two.

I too had my FB account disabled on Friday/Saturday. I had been challenged by friends in the Bubble Game, I had taken my turn on all five challenges, went out shopping and returned to take my next turns to find the usual message “Your account has been disabled by an administrator. If you have any questions or concerns, you can visit our FAQ page here”. What went wrong? I have sent an email and got the response that someone from FB would be in touch (they haven’e yet). I can’t believe that I have been wiped cleaned from my Husband’s FB and all my friends. It doesn’t look good for my character. I have two Grandchildren what will they think their Nannie’s been up to??

21

Stephanie 06.25.08 at 5:03 pm

My Facebook was disabled sometime between last night and this afternoon. I don’t spam, and I don’t add random people. The weird thing is that after I got an email saying that I had been disabled, I got one saying that one of my Notes (which contained a link to a Youtube video friends and I had made, which wasn’t obscene or vulgar at all) had been removed. It was a warning, as if my account hadn’t been disabled at all!
I am in the process of appealing to Facebook, but this is really annoying because I had a lot of things on that account that I can’t get back. Good God.

These are the Facebook phone numbers I found. I’m going to try and call tomorrow:
6505434811 and 4154672300

22

Chris Michael 06.27.08 at 10:58 am

Update: my account was finally re-enabled after around five days. I had to write a series of emails appealing my case. I wrote to several addresses including disabled@facebook.com and I think appeals@facebook.com. They refused to say specifically why they disabled me other than I was searching too fast. They refused to say how fast was “too fast”. They also said my account would be permanently deleted if it happened again. So am I supposed to not search from now on? Too bad 95% of the search results are redundant. So the search is practically useless, anyway. I’ve been using my old MySpace account lately and they’ve made some really nice improvements. Facebook is clearly not intent on making even basic improvements so they’ll fade away like so many other promising sites of the past.

mojo 06.27.08 at 5:23 pm

Facebook is run by a precocious child and the investment money behind them is quietly trying to get the little brat removed and a stable, mature individual in his place.
The way they choose to act toward their supporters is ignorant, childish and reeks of severe emotional trouble.
Another one bites the dust…they are ripe for the taking.
Advice for the very immature zuckerman - take what you can get now before you totally devalue this company with your childish antics.

Nomsta Gooodness 07.08.08 at 12:18 am

I have been a victim of Facebook’s biased TOS/disabled account recently too. I absolutely feel my moral rights have been violated as I have a lot of info and communications inside my FB account - the groups I administered, the event pages I hosted, so many messages, contents like videos and picture albums (which no longer backed up thinking its on FB) etc etc. This is very unfair of them to provide a public service and take it away from a person overnight over a system that is ultimately bias and useless.

I have long been known as ‘Nomsta Gooodness’ by my friends, community and publics, and yet FB do not recognise that fact over so many (hundreds maybe thousands) obviously fake names from Jesus Christes to Rudolph Reindeer to George Bushes. Will they ban Stephen King for not using his real name or Andy Warhol or any of those celebrities who has adopted working names known to others? Biased!

After days of back and forth begging them to release my account based on reasons I have detailed to them through several emails. Only today, the FB staff replied, “if are unable to provide your real name, then please consider this the end of our correspondence.”

I wish I can sue them for causing me distress if I live in USA. But now, all I want is to reconnect with my friends and get the messages I have been missing. There are monetary loss to me as many of these are business correspondences too!

Give me my rights back like Jon Swift, Facebook! Stop being a biased comoany based on a useless system and a big ego.

I used to love their system, even a FB activist of sorts and think huge potential in their project but now, I am utterly disappointed by how irresponsible this company is towards real users.

Wow! You all are very helpful. I randomly found this forum and could use a little help.

Twice in the last two days someone (something?) has changed my status message and used profanity. They also messaged a friend with profanity. Now. my friends have ALL been deleted. I can access my account, but went from 200+ friends to zero, and I no longer show up on my friend’s friend lists….

WTF? Been a FB member for 4+ years and have never had an issue and of course. cannot get anyone to tell me anything.

Suggestions? TIA!

32

Gladys 08.15.08 at 5:47 am

hey!! my account got disabled for reasons i’m not sure of. i send them emails but i still hasn’t received any response. I’m just wondering if there’s a probability that I could retrieve the said account if how many days does it took for my account to be enable? thanks. God Bless

33

Bert 08.15.08 at 11:09 am

It’s very annoying of course to try and log in to your account and get the dreaded message, but what bugs me the most is that you are guilty until proven innocent and they refuse to give any feedback. Taking care of abuse and doing some collateral damage in the process is one thing, but they are essentially disrespectful of their user base by not explaining the reasons behind their acts and not responding to enquiries. FB is a fine product, not great, but if they don’t understand the value of customer care the value of the company will prove to have peaked now and declined since. It’s easy on the internet to move to better competition. If they disrespect their user base the way they are now, that day may come sooner than they expect.

34

John 08.17.08 at 11:11 am

I had my Face book account disabled last Tuesday almost 5 days ago and now am still waiting also send about 5 Emails a day to thenm to try and get them to reinstate me. I feel like I have been a naughty boy for just communicating with friends and family and also trying to make new friends. what is it that say a way of keeping incontact with the people around you!!!!! MMMMMM Disabled = not being able to keep in contact!!!! As for me I am going to badger them till I get my account back

35

Bert 08.17.08 at 12:14 pm

Oh, and another thing: they seem to have less than zero tolerance on whatever trespassing of terms they think you did, but there’s no problem for groups xenophobic groups to divulge their genocide propaganda. E.g. SRBE NA VRBE which is a group glorifying the Serbian genocide in the war. There’s so many “Fuck Islam”-theme groups that FB cannot for the life of them possibly claim they haven’t noticed. There are groups that deny the holocaust. And FB kicks perfectly decent people out without a proper explanation?

36

Geo 08.18.08 at 9:59 pm

Yes, my account also have been disabled, lol what reason i have no idea, they say import friends from yahoo and msn, i did about 500 of them , in 3 days i brought 300 ppl who never even heard of facebook, what a free marketing tool i was lol, all invites out ppl started adding me as a friend and poof there i go, well i have emailed facebook with no avail, think that is the nrom, like they say, if we have 4 million ppl why should we worry about 20 who invited about 4000 others lol. brilliant business concept facebook lol, u spend nothing and gain all, well there mistake was that the ppl i invited was mostly dj’s, radio and tv personnel in phillipines, SA and NY lol, think a good show about this could discourage a few thousand and make FB feel the uncomfortness it caused so many with the lame system. lol and i experienced FB for 1 week only lol, i feel blessed i was not longer on there lol, i do feel sorry for all the other ppl who been on there for years, think if all minds come together and send a pertition of about 5000ppl and appeal would have more effect

37

Fox 08.19.08 at 11:14 am

I too today had a message show up while logged into Facebook, stating my account had been disabled also without warning. I maybe get on the site every other week and probably send one to two messages each time I’m on. I probably join a new group once every two months. I have never sent any harassing messages to anyone or posted anything abuse. To tell the truth, I have always been wary of sites like these, because of situations like this. They can have years of your personal information and content in their hands and can take it from you in a heart beat. I have emailed them with my complaint and have requested a way the issue can be rectified.

If users continue to lose their accounts without appropriate reasoning. FB will quickly face more hostility from their users. Especially as previous posts here have mentioned a losing pictures, emails and contacts, which can’t be easily be retrieved if at all.

38

Bert 08.21.08 at 7:08 am

FOLLOW UP

After six days of writing e-mails I finally got a sign of brain activity at FB. In my last mail I bugged them to answer with just a short yes or no whether this non-communication was standard fare at FB and lo and behold, Clint apologized for the delay and explained I would get my account back if I sent them my real name. I did. After a couple of hours my account was reactivated, they even changed my name for me.

One mystery left: why is there an “Edit Name” button?

39

Nik Haris 08.22.08 at 1:31 am

I am just another statistic. My account was disabled and the most likely reason is that I used an application which requires us to add many friends, which i did.

Three emails sent and no real response. FB doesn’t seem to value the users, which is not very smart. It is we the users that enable this platform to work, where FB earns money from advertising revenue and our online purchases. Didn’t they learn this in Business 101?

40

Bert 08.25.08 at 5:51 am

FOLLOW UP part III logged in today and was about to send my weekly update to the members of a group I’m administrator of and got a msg accusing me of abusing FB for spamming and warning my account would be closed down again. Tehre are 47 members in that group. I didn’t send anything then.
On my home page FB suggested a friend to add who I actually know so I clicked on ADD and again I got the same warning.
Later today I opened my Inbox and clicked on a msg a friend sent me and *swoosh* again that pop-up.

WTF FB?

Is it really necessary to piss your users off like this?

When they finally answered my mails and reactivated my account I replied with a thank you and asked why a certain user was allowed to send vulgar messages to innocent people’s walls. They said they’d look into it. That lowlife is still happily doing whatever turns him on on FB and they send ME a msg for spamming?

Facebook just suspended my account 2 days ago. No apparent reason. Facebook sucks. At least notify your users before disabling their account, or specifically warn them about actions that are violating facebook policies. Facebook is a crock when it comes to helping me. Facebook sucks!

Hi,
My facebook account has been disabled suddenly, (I am not sure about the reason but maybe because of adding freinds) since 06/09/2008.

And I sent emails many times for disabled@facebook.com but no body answer me up to now.

I don’t know what to do return my facebook account again.

I have my friends, photos, everything….

I got disabled for joining too many groups! I didnt realise there was a limit!

48

Starr 10.16.08 at 1:19 am

It is apparent Facebook has no idea how to run their own website. I have a hard time understanding how they justify disabling peoples accounts for using applications that they permit. Its quite frustrating indeed.

It looks as though I’m just another statistic as well.

49

noumenon 10.20.08 at 1:32 pm

Does anybody know, when they ask for “real” name, how they know the given name is a real name? Do they insist, demand, or put the person through additional steps to verify that the given name is a “real” name? I mean, what’s to stop someone whose account is disabled, just give another made up name, but real looking? Thank you.

50

Ben A.k.M 10.25.08 at 10:32 am

This is absurd and ridiculous! How can they just disabled my account just awhile ago without sending a warning . I have gone through their terms and conditions, their user conduct and none states that adding friends quickly will caused blocking and stuff. I am like wtf>? U\I have imported lots of contacts from gmail and other email accounts, so what’s the big deal of adding one friend at a time, its not even a hundred! Got disabled without seeing any block warning or whatsoever. Good job FB! Sounds like the work of a immature kid. Suxors! Please grow up.

Hmmm I wonder how one gets their facebook account reactivated when all they get is a computer generated reply, then when trying to send emails to facebook all they do is bounce back now. So how on earth can one prove they are themselves if facebook ceases all contact?…… Something else I wonder, when an account gets reactivated (well if that ever happens), do you get all your friends back on your list? and all the applications you were running, or it’s a start from scratch scenario?

54

Brian Kurpis 11.06.08 at 1:50 pm

My name is Brian Kurpis, I use facebook to connect with my family and friends. I haven’t broken any rules. I was just on it yesterday and today facebook disabled my account. Please can you find my info, please do not delete. My memory isn’t that good to remember everybody.

I too got disabled. Non-sense as I feel I did nothing wrong apart from messaging my friends (real ones). i only have friends I met outside of facebook, from my previous experiences.

This is a totalitarist behavior. I hear Google is launching a new site for networking and just cant wait to get it and move there!!!

I never had a problem on the OLD facebook. Soon after the NEW facebook began, I started receiving messages that I had exceeded my limit for posting on walls, etc. I even send a PM to a FRIEND of mine, and a dialogue box popped up that said I was spamming people! Now THAT made me mad. I don’t spam. I emailed FB 10 days ago and received a reply that said they were working on the problem and to IGNORE the warning. A few days later (Thanksgiving Day) my account is disabled. I’ve sent about 6 emails and have yet to receive a response. FB has just a little TOO MUCH POWER.

Huy 12.03.08 at 3:27 am

Hi all,

My account was disabled the last week and It’s still not recovered. I’m very upset about this. My account was deactivated with no notification, no warning.

I have mailed to the facebook customer services several mails and till now, no answer. How can they survive if they don’t take care about their customers ?

This is not the first time that my account is disabled. And at each time, same response. You misuse facebook, bla bla bla… I haven’t done anything wrong, neither adding some friends those last months, neither leaving some bad comments… The only thing I’ve done last month is uploading my vacation pictures.

Where is our liberty, may I ask ?

Hi there,
I’ve been blocked from facebook few days ago.
My question is: does 100% of all account that got re-activated (after sending them the usual request via e-mail, saying that your are sorry for what you did) will have to endure an “unlimited probation”??

Thanx

My Facebook account was disabled back in July. When I asked facebook why? they gave me at least 4 different reasons, none of them which stood true:

1. I was reported by someone for spamming; this is not true as my account was disabled instantly, one minute I was in Facebook then the next minute I was locked out.

2. I have been inviting too many friends; not true because the day my account was disabled I didn’t invite any friends.

3. My actions have been considered as spam; not true again; all I was doing was posting to the groups I belong to, admit idly the message was the same and because of the use of tabbed browsing I was able to post the same message to multiple groups quickly. Facebook actually said this was an error on there behalf and they would look into re-instating my account. 7 days later and 3 emails later, I then got their usual response that I had violated the T&Cs and they will not re-consider. Then the insult of ‘Thank you for your understanding’ at the end of all their emails!!

4. I have too many friends; well duh this a social networking group.

After 2 months of no response to my emails I have given up on Facebook. However today I have sent them another email to see if they will re-consider. Yeah like I’ll get a response.

I am tempted to take facebook to court for disabling my account without any hard evidence that I was spamming. The way I see it if a criminal goes to jail he is given a hearing and told why he is going to jail; with facebook they cannot seem to give you an exact reason as to why the account was disabled. My case shows that I have had 4 different reasons from 4 different members of staff.

After 2 years of use, my profile was disabled for no reason whatsoever. I attempted to contact them and they repeatedly ignored me. I set up a profile with my work email a few weeks after upon giving up and they disbaled it after a week…I had emailed them from it asking about my original one. Any ideas of how I can get in touch with them? It’s really my only means of keeping in touch with everyone as I am working abroad. Really frustrating!
Thanks

My Facebook account was disabled earlier today because I was sending (same) messages to different friends - we were talking about the same topic. There was a pink color box warning, I noticed it, and stopped sending messages. The next minute, I got logged out of Facebook, and when I tried to login back, I found out my account has been disabled by administrator.

I received a warning email before my Facebook account was disabled but I wasn’t checking my mail at that point of time. In other words, I wasn’t aware of the warning email at all. Sigh. I’ve emailed Facebook regarding this matter. More than 12 hours have passed and no reply from them yet. I hope they will reinstate my Facebook account soon.

My account was disabled yesterday because I reported that an individual used a false FB address to continue to send me homophobic and lewd remarks because they didn’t like the way that they had been ‘treated’ in the OWNED application!! I reported THEM and yet it was ME that gets banned. I’ve asked to be reinstated but no response yet to the disabled@ address. To be honest to be banned with no warnings or no explanations is pretty poor. Aside from losing all contacts I could probably life without it and in future I will manage risk by keeping all new contacts on e-mail platforms.

I was responding to a message on the wall of a group. My reply was loner than 1000 characters so I had to post a few massages on that wall. The next thing I know I have been logged off. I check my email and there is a warning.

Why dont they warn you before you do something wrong. I dont really know why I have been kicked out. I mean it is a social thing- if we cant talk what’s the point?

1) warnings should be issued b4 you submit you message 2) they should include the precise reason of the warning 3) if there is a character limit the page should tell you ho many you have left.

My Facebook account was disabled a few days ago without a warning for no reason. I dont spam or anything and i havent done anything against the terms and conditions. I was signed in and then it signed me and out and i couldnt sign back in. I hadnt made any changes or joined anything for a couple of days so i have no reason why my account was disabled. I have emailed them multiple times but nothing has been done.

My account was disabled yesterday because I was palying games and adding lots of friends for these games. Why they run these kind of game where you need lots add?

85

dmr 01.28.09 at 12:53 pm

When my account was disabled it took about 5 emails and a week before it was reinstated. If you have done nothing wrong, you SHOULD get your account back. I know how frustrating this is. Just be nice!! Remember, you get more flies with honey than with vinegar. (;

SW 01.28.09 at 2:20 pm

Further to my comment of 15/1/09, my account was restored although the e-mail was from a ‘bot’ that said I’d been banned for sending inappropriate e-mails, but they couldn’t tell me which one it was!
As a consequence, I have pulled out of many groups, all networks, reduced friends #s, and updated privacy settings to stop non-friends sending messages or adding friendships. Closing down my access basically. I also have made the precaution of getting e-mail addresses off Facebook and onto my home e-mail account. Remember, FB could be withdrawn at any time, so don’t get caught out!!

My facebook account was blocked 2 days ago. I haven’t done anything wrong on there. I guess it could be my nickname that i have as my middle name though it is not inappropriate. I need my facebook back because i use it for communication throughout my campus, and I also use it to promote events that I host. I’ve sent 2 e-mails; hopefully all I have to do is be patient and hope for the best. :(

Aaron 02.01.09 at 12:20 am

I also had my facebook disabled. I admit I was requesting friends at a precipitous rate. However, I was adding people through various networks. We can do this can’t we? Furthermore, I went to a high school with 1700 people and a major university; 32,000 pupils enrolled.
Basically, I was warned and it asked me my intent and purpose. I clicked on the “networking and educational” links and felt that was all that was needed; for this gave me the impression that I was no longer considered a spammer. Either way, this FB concept is garbage and I will be happy to lodge a class complaint and do all I can do to discredit this site; if that is possible.

91

Aaron 02.01.09 at 12:27 am

When I mentioned I was warned it was just after clicking on the “request friends” link. A big box said I MAY have been violating a feature. I assumed it was most likely (indeed) for requesting too many friends in a period of time.
I wasn’t warned via e-mail. So, I felt that maybe I was rendered a NON spammer and could continue to request friends because of this. I should have employed a little more common sense. Again, I didn’t sincerely feel what I was doing was wrong AND thought the concept of facebook was to network, reunite with family, friends, and classmates, and meet new people.
I guess not. I am still ready to lodge a complaint. This needs to reach a mass crowd.
Note: This site really has too many gay features. This “you have a request to engage in pinning the nose on the donkey, all the while blind folded” gets too corny.

I see I am just a statistic when it comes to a disabled Facebook account. I was posting two music videos from You Tube through their Facebook link when I was “disabled”. Is my account just gone for goo? This is a bunch of shit!
