The Facebook Toolbar for Firefox is Handy and Dandy

by Teresa Valdez Klein on September 14, 2007

Eric Weaver posted this in his Facebook shared items this morning. I’ve been using this tool almost since it became available and have become a very big fan. It keeps me up to date on new messages, friend requests, and my friends status updates. When I’m browsing in Firefox, I’m always connected to Facebook even when I’m working on eight other things.

My favorite feature by far has to be the dynamic and incredibly helpful search-ahead box.

You can begin to type in a friend’s name and the search-ahead box pulls up all the matching results:

You can either click on the friend you want or finish typing in his full name to get some options about what you’d like to do to that person:

Then you can select the option you want, which takes you directly to the appropriate page in Facebook.

This feature is even easier to use and more helpful than Facebook’s own search tool when you’re looking for one of your friends.

Another helpful inclusion is the “share” feature, which allows you to browse around, see a page you want, and list it in your Facebook shared items from a popup window. I know this is nothing revolutionary, as you can do the same thing with the Facebook shared items bookmarklet. But the nice thing about this feature is that it frees up your master bookmarks bar for other bookmarklets and links.

Ain’t it cool? The pop-up notifications really turn it into a real-time IM system as well. To me, that drastically ups the value of FB.

Facebook is unique or one of a few very nimble social networking programs. I haven’t used any others, although I looked at MySpace and didn’t like it. I do like Facebook, but must qualify that. I also find it clunky. I don’t need repetitious email notifications of anything. Things seem to pop up unbidden, for no reason. Old messages in my inbox, already read, etc.. Some of it could be me. I don’t know. But it shouldn’t be so complicated if it’s just me. I’m not that dumb.

Facebook, as wonderful as it is, is clunky and seems to lack care. Instead of allowing a lot of outside apps that do what Facebook’s default apps do, hindering interaction (if others don’t like and use those apps), Facebook should ban those specifically and instead upgrade it’s own apps. They need it. The wall and wall-to-wall features for example do the same thing! Whereas, What’s needed here, obviously, is a wall-to-wall feature that posts a message on both Friends’ walls at the same time.

Right now, I’m trying to figure out why my Facebook Toolbar includes a handy ‘house’ icon and the one I just put on my Mother’s browser does not. But maybe that’s not Facebook.

Still, I feel that Facebook’s father needs to be around a little more to make sure the offspring is on track. Or is the program a de facto orphan?
