As I’ve been fond of mentioning in my occasional online bio, I have either a knack for or an obsession with making pages look cleaner (and in my opinion, better). This is endlessly frustrating to me in an age when making an uglier page is somehow turning into a sign of success.
But one of the things that I have always liked about Facebook, especially over MySpace, is the organized, clean, you-can’t-screw-it-up look to the profile pages. Well, now that everyone can add as many applications as they like, you can certainly clutter the space.
So my problem has become this: how do I keep all of the awesome applications I like to sport, such as BlogTips, Google Reader Shared Items, Kyte.tv, Blog Friends…the list goes on. How do I keep them, and at the same time keep my profile from degenerating into an endless scroll bar?
I’ve figured out two tricks that help me out on this one.
Number one: collapse most of your apps. Since, like Fred, some of you might not know what that means, it just means clicking on the little arrow at the right side of the application title bar, it simply folds the application up.
Makes a big difference.
Number two: your third item should be your wall. I don’t know why, I can’t really explain it, but if your profile order goes Mini-Feed, Favorite App, Wall, Everything else, it just looks better. Check out my profile, or Teresa’s. Looks pretty good, doesn’t it?
Some of you probably don’t really care that much. After all you don’t look at your profile as much as you do other people’s, or groups. But I like a clean profile. And that’s how I manage mine.
Any other tricks that I’m missing?

Collapsing apps is ok, but moving them around is more fun.
There are 2 ways:
1. Click on anything & drag it to a new position. Items can be moved into the left column this way which shortens the length of the page considerably. (The mini feed is static)
2. To right of Applications click on ‘edit’
Rearrange app’s using arrow things on left.
Tip I just figured out tonite:
To reduce items in the mini feed -
Under Privacy tab
News Feed and Mini-Feed Privacy
(I unselected many there which should clean up that area).
Scoble ocmmented today that adjusting these settings isn’t intuitive. I agree!

@Connie you’re right! Those are both good tips. I’ve used number 1 myself, but I’ve never played with number 2 before.
I think a lot of Facebook’s privacy features are relatively un-intuitive. I hope that changes in the future.
