Connie Bensen on How to Become Someone’s Facebook Friend
Connie Bensen has posted a great walk-through of setting up your Facebook and engaging with Facebook groups. One of her observations about friending people struck me as an emerging best practice:
And if you invite someone to be your friend, just put a note in on how you connected.
I’ve been getting a lot of friend requests recently from people whose connection to me isn’t obvious until I investigate a bit. This can be annoying at best, and downright creepy if I can’t figure out why someone is friending me.
Lately, whenever and wherever I’ve posted my Facebook badge, I’ve left a short note indicating how I’d like to be approached. Namely, “give me some context.” This is particularly important if you are a man approaching a woman.
I think Facebook should add a setting — like the one on Linkedin — that allows people to list how and for what kinds of connections they like to be approached. It removes ambiguity and creates comfort around the process of friending.
What are some other friending best practices?
